November 22, 2018 | John Bercow | Tom Brake | Helen Goodman | Andrea Leadsom | Christian Matheson | Barry Sheerman | John Spellar | Pete Wishart Speaker John Bercow asks Leader of the House Andrea Leadsom to behave more courteously toward him during a tense sequence of points of order. Most of the tension arose from Bercow's unwillingness to proceed until he had Leadsom's attention, and Leadsom's unwillingness to give it. Bercow also gives noteworthy responses to Barry Sheerman and Tom Brake. In short, he tells them, "Let's not get carried away." Helen Goodman asks a prescient question about the ability of members to table amendments to the Business of the House motion. Bercow confirms it is indeed possible, and allowed such an amendment to be tabled several weeks later (Jan 9, 2019), creating an uproar among Brexiteers. | |
