UK Government Announces Restrictions to Combat Spread of New Coronavirus Strain (Posted December 19, 2020)



Having emerged from lockdown on Dec 2 and entered into a revised, more restrictive tier system intended to slow to spread of coronavirus in anticipation of a planned easing of restrictions over Christmas, the UK government announced today that it will introduce a fourth tier which will be imposed on London and areas of the East and South East of England and will essentially return those regions to conditions similar to the November lockdown.

Three days prior, at Prime Minister's Question Time, Boris Johnson insisted that the planned easing go forward. Since then, the government's advisors have found that a new strain of coronavirus which is similarly virulent to the old strain but up to 70% more transmissible and has caused a recent surge in infections.
