Queen Confers 36 New Peerages, Kenneth Clarke Duly Ennobled (Posted August 1, 2020)



On Friday July 31, the UK government published the list of 36 new peerages conferred by the queen, 18 at the 2019 dissolution and 18 from the 2020 Political Peerages list.

The most notable name on the dissolution list is that of the Rt. Hon and Learned former member for Rushcliffe and Father of the House, Kenneth Clarke CH QC. One of the most revered parliamentarians of our time, Clarke appeared on the Order Paper's Top 25 from the site's creation through his retirement at the 2019 general election.



Other former MP's on the peerages list include former Labour MPs and staunch critics of Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the party, Ian Austin and John Woodcock; former Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and candidate to succeed John Bercow as Speaker of the House, Sir Henry Bellingham; former Labour MP, and later an Independent after leaving the partying over its handling of antisemitism, Frank Field; former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Phillip Hammond; former Minister of State for Policing and Criminal Justice, Nicholas Herbert; former Labour MP for Vauxhall and Leave supporter Kate Hoey; former Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation, and brother of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Jo Johnson; former Minister for the Armed Forces, John Mark Lancaster; former Chief Whip, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Chairman of the Conservative Party, Sir Patrick McLoughlin; former Labour MP and Vote Leave chair, Gisela Stuart; and former minister for the arts and technology Ed Vaizey.
