We Have a Winner... (Posted October 24, 2022) Tweet Rishi Sunak is the only candidate left standing after Boris Johnson conceded Sunday evening and Penny Mordaunt, having failed to reach the 100 MP nomination threshold, conceded on Monday. The party membership vote has been mooted, and Sunak will form a government in the sovereign's name, becoming King Charles III's second Prime Minister in as many months following the resignation of Liz Truss. Sunak and Truss competed head to head for the leadership over the summer, and although Sunak was the overwhelming favorite among MPs in the early stages of the contest, the party membership on the whole preferred Truss 57% to 43%. This time, the parliamentary Conservative party coalesced around Sunak as the unity candidate, with former Boris, Mordaunt, and Truss supporters pledging their support over the weekend. A list of ministerial appointments can be found here. Notable appointments include Jeremy Hunt, retained as Chancellor of the Exchequer; James Cleverley, retained as Foreign Secretary; Home Secretary Suella Braverman returning to her post after resigning the week before; Michael Gove returning as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities, Local Government, and Levelling Up; Penny Mordaunt retained as Leader of the House of Commons; and Mel Stride returning to Cabinet as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. |
