Johnson Ministry Nearing the Brink (UPDATE: It's Over) (Posted July 6, 2022) Tweet Boris Johnson's premiership is disintegrating before our eyes. Having survived a series of scandals ranging from lockdown gatherings to the Owen Paterson standards fiasco, and having nonetheless survived a Tory party vote of no confidence only a month ago, Johnson finds himself completely adrift following reports claiming he knew about improprieties committed by Tamworth MP Christopher Pincher before appointing him Deputy Chief Whip. Government officials all but confirmed the reports in claiming that Johnson did not attempt to hide the truth but had merely forgotten that he had, in fact, been briefed. The resignations of Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care (and Sunak's predecessor as Chancellor) Sajid Javid have triggered a cascade of ministerial resignations within the last 24 hours. Reports also suggest that earlier today several members of the Cabinet, including HCLG and Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove, Home Secretary Priti Patel, Chief Whip Chris Heaton-Harris, and Sunak's replacement Nadhim Zahawi, have confronted Johnson and advised him to step down. The Prime Minister nonetheless remains in situ. He may be biding his time while organizing an orderly transition behind the scenes, but the public line, at least for now, is that he will carry on with the mandate from the 2019 general election and implement policies that deliver on the voters' priorities, including a new tax cut announced today. As it stands, Johnson is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. He may be able to rearrange, reshuffle, and maneuver with battlefield promotions for a little while longer, but it seems inevitable that his ministry will founder. As of Thursday, Johnson has announced that he will step down as leader of the party and make way for a new Prime Minister. The announcement comes after more resignations, and Nadhim Zahawi publicly advising Johnson to resign (after advising him so privately the day before). New members of the cabinet were appointed Thursday to fill the most senior of an abundance of vacant ministerial roles. | |
